PROFESSIONAL LONGARM MACHINE QUILTING
SERVICES & PRICING
Before you can calculate the cost of longarm machine quilting your quilt top, you must know how many square feet are in your quilt.
To calculate square feet:
Multiply the length of the quilt in inches times the width of the quilt in inches = square inches
Square inches of quilt divided by 144 = square feet (sq.ft.)
EDGE TO EDGE QUILTING: Edge to edge quilting is an all-over design, from top to bottom and from side to side, with one color of thread. It can follow a pattern that is applied in interlocking rows or can be a freehand overall design. This is the most economical way to quilt your quilt. See the Quilting Patterns page for many samples to choose from.
- $2.15/sq.ft. -- All overall pantograph patterns, regardless of the density are $2.15/sq.ft.
CUSTOM QUILTING: Custom quilting uses a variety of techniques and patterns to highlight the uniqueness of your quilt top. In general, any technique that requires the use of a ruler, such as stitch-in-the-ditch (SID), or continuous curves (CC) is more expensive.
- $3.75-$4.00/sq.ft. -- for light to moderate custom techniques that involve no SID or ruler work, and no background fillers
- $4.25/sq.ft. -- for light SID or ruler work combined with custom techniques; moderate background fillers
- $4.75/sq.ft. and up -- more extensive SID or ruler work combined with custom techniques, moderate background fillers; includes extensive crosshatching, outlining applique, formal feathers. All custom quilting on samplers is in this category.
MACHINE BASTING: $0.75/sq.ft. basting in one direction, every four inches with approximately one inch stitches, for those who want to hand quilt. (Please keep in mind that there is a $30 minimum quilting charge)
THREAD CHARGE: Prices above include poly thread. There is a $0.10/sq.ft. charge for cotton thread and $0.15/sq.ft. for variegated or specialty threads.
Batting:
You can supply your own batting, or I can offer it to you at a fair price. In my opinion, if you have chosen nice, quality fabrics for your quilt top, you should follow through with a nice quality batting which will extend the life of your quilt. I reserve the right to refuse to use some battings because of their extreme thinness or tendency to have an uneven loft, almost creating bald spots. My favorite battings to use are:
Quilter's Dream 100% Cotton: Natural color. Request loft is the thinnest loft. Select loft is a medium loft, and is my very favorite batting (prices are below). This cotton has minimal shrinkage (only 1% when washed in cold water). This batting also comes in white and deluxe lofts at slightly higher prices. (Request loft are slightly lower prices.)
- $9.00/yd off the roll (93" wide)
- $8.60 for lap size or smaller, 46 x 60"
- $39.50 for king size, 121 x 121"
Quilter's Dream Poly: This poly is like no other poly. It feels as soft as cotton, but doesn't shrink like cotton. The prices below are for the select loft (average) It also comes in a request loft (thinner) at slightly lower prices.
QD Poly select:
- $6.60/yd off the roll (93" wide)
- $8.00 for lap size or smaller, 60 x 60"
- $24.00 for king size, 121 x 121"
Hobbs 80/20 : 80% cotton/20% poly. This batting shrinks about 5% and will produce a quilt with an antique look.
- $7.50/yd off the roll (96" wide)
Quilter's Dream Blend (70% cotton, 30% polyester) Comes in select loft only
- $11.00 for lap size, 60 x 60"
- $18.80 for twin size, 72 x 92"
- $23.60 for double size, 91 x 96"
- $26.00 for queen size, 92 x 108"
- $37.00 for king size, 121 x 121"
Hobbs Tuscany Poly: If you must have a puffy poly, this is my favorite. It's not too thin and not too thick. Since it is a siliconized poly it is extremely soft and very drapable.
- $5.25/yd off the roll (96" wide)
Quilter's Dream 100% Wool: Dream wool is wonderfully light, but warm, with a slight loft and soft drape. It can be gently machine washed and dried without shrinkage.
- $15.00 for lap size, 46 x 60"
- $24.00 for twin size, 72 x92"
- $31.40 for double size, 91 x 96"
- $34.50 for queen size, 92 x 108"
- $48.50 for king size, 120 x 120"
Wide Backings:
Using wide backings makes quilting your quilts so much easier. And, in case you didn’t know, wide quilt backs are much more economical than piecing together $8.50/yard fabric. Most wide backings (108”) of high quality fabric are $12.00-$14.00/yard, which is a much better deal. For example, a queen sized quilt typically will use 8.5 yards of 45” wide fabric.... 8.5 yards times $8.50/yard is $72.25 just for your backing fabric. A 108” wide backing typically costs $39.00 for 3 yards, which is more than enough for a queen sized quilt. That’s a savings of $33.25 for your backing fabric!

Binding: Prepared with fabric you provide:
- $0.10/linear inch -- binding prepared, and machine attached to front of quilt
- $0.20/linear inch -- binding prepared, machine attached to front, hand stitched to back
- $0.30/linear inch -- curved bindings, machine attached to front, hand stitched to back

Quilt Repairs: Quilts with wavy borders or areas that will not lie flat require extra work that WILL result in extra charges. Minimal fullness can be eased in without problems, but too much fullness will result in pleats or tucks if additional work is not done to fix problem areas before quilting. There is a minimum additional charge of $0.40/sq.ft. for any quilt that has wavy borders or problem areas that must be fixed before they can be quilted. For example: a queen size quilt with 50 sq.ft. would cost $20 more (50 x $0.40/sq.ft.). Please see the Quilt-making Tips page for information on how to prevent wavy borders and excess fullness within the body of your quilt.
Quilt Preparation: $10.00/hr for the following services:
- excessive ironing (beyond the routine quick ironing given to all quilts before quilting)
- trimming excessive threads (this is only done if dark threads will show through white fabrics)
- minor repairs to quilt top, such as resewing seams that have pulled apart or were never sewn in the first place
Hanging Sleeve: $0.20/linear inch (from fabric supplied by customer) hanging sleeve is prepared; machine attached to top of quilt and hand stitched on bottom of sleeve.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
There is a minimum charge of $25.00 for any quilt.
The minimum charge is due to the fact that the quilting charges on a smaller quilt cannot cover the time spent preparing and loading a quilt onto the quilting machine.
